Request: Support Epwing format in the coming future

Postby hanyl05 » Fri Dec 09, 2011 9:01 am

Epwing format is a semi-official format used by most Electronic Dictionary makers in Japan and almost all of
the dictionary are official and standard.
Currently there are several free softwares that support epwing format dictionary, of which the most famous one
is Ebwin(http://www31.ocn.ne.jp/~h_ishida/).

If Goldendict can support Epwing format in the future, I suppose it is really the most powerful non-profit program.

Hi, Ikm,
The following are some information for Epwing:

1 http://www.japaneselanguagetools.com/docs/EBstudio.html
2 http://www.hloeffler.info/epwing/epwing_format.html
3 http://www.mblondel.org/journal/2006/02 ... tionaries/

Actually there are not so much information about Epwing in English,. Most of the documents are written in Japanese.

Personally, The DIY of Epwing is not so active than Mdict format. Now in China the DIY of Mdict format (.mdx dictionary file)
is very active.
Mdict has released software that can compile dictionaries by users several years ago.

Ikm God, do you have plans to support this Epwing format in the future?
As Epwing format is an official format in Japan, the contents of the dictionary are really perfect and abundant.

Я тут уже писал viewtopic.php?f=8&t=69&p=557&hilit=EPWING#p557

The deceased Vostokopedia had a number of "professionals" in EPWING (I am a user mostly). See this from archive.org.

I believe I can still find one or two who knew it well on ru-board. I have some docs and progs for compilation, and a bunch of dictionaries for testing, if you are interested. The drawback of EPWING has always been the lack of Unicode support. It's pros are good multimedia support (video, pictures, etc.), multiple indexes (a necessity for Japanese and other Eastern languages), Japanese government standardization (standard JIS-X4081) and support (it's an official standard), backward compatibility to earlier versions of EPWING and pre-EPWING formats, a large number of various dictionaries, cookbooks, encyclopedias, etc. in this format.

There is a GPL EPWING compiler at http://www.sra.co.jp/people/m-kasahr/freepwing/. Commercial compiler is at http://www31.ocn.ne.jp/~h_ishida/EBStudio/Tech.html

Some intro into the format in English is at http://www.hloeffler.info/epwing/ with some Perl conversion scripts, documentation, links, etc.
