The display style is built-in and resides inside GoldenDict binary, while the addon style is some additional external style, typically provided by user. A user could have more than one style and could select the one to use via the settings.

Yes, you need to provide your own icon since the default is indeed ugly. My style uses an icon named control_play_lingvo.png, you could put your own icon for sounds.
