Gentoo Linux: Early Access Ebuilds Available

Postby leycec » Sat Sep 27, 2014 3:03 am

The third-party overlay raiagent is overjoyed to publish ebuilds for both the most recent official Goldendict release (1.0.5-RC) and github HEAD (Early Access, as in very early).

Since the most recent Portage ebuild is four years old (1.0.1) and hence digitally geriatric, this will probably come as welcome news. (Probably. But maybe you like not having EPWING, TIFF, Zim, or extensive locale support. I know you're out there somewhere.)

While the official ebuild resides in the app-text/ category, all raiagent ebuilds have been moved to app-dicts/. Which is patently sensible (Goldendict is a dictionary application, after all), but not without issue: if you've already installed Goldendict 1.0.1, you'll need to manually uninstall that before proceeding. (Yes, thanks to the category move, you need to do this manually. Such is life in the hardcore Gentoo trenches.)

We strongly recommend installing the early access version. In either case, installation is customarily "straightforward":

* Uninstall Goldendict 1.0.1, if installed.

Code: Select all
emerge -C goldendict

* Add the raiagent overlay, if not already added.

Code: Select all
layman -a raiagent

* If installing the early access version, unmask the live ebuild.

Code: Select all
echo ">=app-dicts/goldendict-1.0.5_rc **" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords

* Else, unmask the 1.0.5-RC ebuild.

Code: Select all
echo ">=app-dicts/goldendict-1.0.5_rc" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords

* (Optional) If installing the early access version, enable USE flags. The 1.0.5-RC ebuild doesn't support any interesting USE flags, unfortunately; hence, the recommendation to install early access. (We recommend epwing for users concerned about Japanese dictionaries.)

Code: Select all
echo "app-dicts/goldendict epwing" >> /etc/portage/package.use

* Install.

Code: Select all
emerge goldendict

* Rejoice, for dictionaries are good!

Code: Select all
goldendict &

If something terrible happens, consider posting an issue at github rather than in this thread – which I'll probably check only sporadically.

Enjoy the dicting, fellow penguineers.
