Re: UI Tweaks - Synonyms / Similar Words Window

As far as I can tell, both these products use freely available WordNet 3.0 database and try to make a thesaurus out of it.

In Goldendict, there is a WordNet available as well, but as a dictionary (not a thesaurus). Looking at the WordWeb Free, the quality of their thesaurus is rather poor (since it is mostly computer-generated from WordNet), so I'd recommend to use a proper thesaurus instead of this one.

Both those dictionaries have a window that lists Synonyms / Similar Words that may be substituted for or that may be used instead of the particular word that was searched for; effectively a Thesaurus function window that helps frame the meaning of the word by providing words with a similar definition or meaning.

Nothing is stopping you to create a special dictionary group in Goldendict and place a couple of good thesauruses there. Then you could open a separate tab, switch to that group and voilá. That's how I use GoldenDict when writing, I have a special dictionary group with all my thesauruses.

You could combine various dictionaries in the group, like putting one normal dictionary plus a couple of thesaurus, etc. The sky is the limit. :)

Sorry, I am new to GoldenDict. Wordweb and Artha do use a 'computer generated' thesaurus function from what I can tell. It isn't the best but I have gotten use to it, and frankly, it is better than nothing.

Do I need to specify a specific Thesaurus database? Can I specify one? I did not know I could do that.

What Thesaurus database do you use? Is this a function that is available. (Sorry if this is off topic ... it may appear to be so.)

EDIT: Sorry, I realise now that I should have searched the forum for Thesaurus instead of posting here re Synonyms. But still, advice re a Thesaurus Database would be appreciated.

GoldenDict supports all popular dictionary formts: Stardict, Babylon, Lingvo DSL. Any thesaurus in any of these formats will do, and there are plenty of thesauruses floating around the net. Then you just add it to GoldenDict (in the configuration settings you could specify the directory where GoldenDict will look for dictionaries).

Look at http://goldendict.org/dictionaries for a starting point where to find some dictionaries.

OMG! You rock guys! I can't believe it!
Some improvements :)

Image

1. Remove this (what is it called?)
2. Larger font in the translate bar.
3. Speak button should be inside the bar so when speech is not available, it just disappears.

4. Add windows 7 glass effect for mini mode, it will look great!

If navigation bar was in vertical state then upgrading to your version makes the bar distorted.

So please fix this bug. Navigation bar should always ignore what is written in config about the state and must always use horizontal mode.

Hi,
Can someone comment on the status of the UI changes that were done and mentioned on this thread? It is almost an year since a test build was prepared and posted here. Even now, these are not even part of the early access build (and I am not sure when the next release is planned). Is it still being worked on or something happened in between which I do not know about? (I don't visit these forums regularly).

These were wonderful changes and added the much needed UI changes that was long due for such a wonderful program.

Hi,

The changes have not been integrated yet. And I'm the one to blame for that. The reason is simple - not enough time to work on them to achieve a high code quality and 100% completeness of this feature. Sorry about that.

I can understand that. You and chulai (and may be others) are doing wonderful work and continuing the great saga of ikm. But at the same time, we are on to multiplatforms and (if I presume correctly) this is not a full time job to any of you. Hopefully you will get some time to complete the works soon and release an early access build.

Is there any possibility of posting an updated test build? The updated code from your development environment should be enough (Don't worry about the code quality). As I am (and I believe many others are) using your test build instead of the official one but it is not updated for quite some time. This also gives us an opportunity to work as testers of the code changes.

OK, I've comitted the UI Tweaks code to the main repository, finally. :)

Users now have a choice:
* The new way: The field to enter words located like in all browsers, in the toolbar.
* The old way: to search in the sidebar.

Both UI modes are supported and can be switched between via View -> Search Pane menu.

Here's the up-to date screenshot:

P.S. Updated (6 times already, with bugfixes) EXE (version goldendict-1.0.1-435-g76ffa2e.rar) can be downloaded from: http://rghost.ru/42515537 (just copy the goldendict.exe over the EARLY ACCESS version).
