What's new?

Postby The waiter » Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:40 pm

I use Goldendict almost everyday and I recommended it to everyone who need some app as this. I was looking from time to time what is new in the newest beta release and was happy about its heavy development. The last beta release is from 3th of march so my question is what is happening. Is this great project alive? There are many suggestions and requests how to make this app almost genial so why to stop. Please tell me that new version is ready to come out...:)

Project is alive and kicking but moving slowly. ;)

These are some of the last additions:

    1) Babylon style was added that show dictionary icons on the result panel.
    2) Browse tabs in MRU style was implemented.
    3) Images tags allow data uris (embedded images instead of external images) for Stardict dictionaries. BTW, this is how Google Images handle image thumbnails on its results.
    4) Fixed building GoldenDict under Mac OS X.
    5) Fixed building GoldenDict under Arch Linux.
    6) Several bug fixes and language translations updated.
    7) Tajik Language Support added.

You can check last changes for yourself here: https://github.com/goldendict/goldendict/commits/master

Thanx Chulai. Happy to read your words.

1. You are talking about Arch Linux build. Is there any chance to have deb package as I am an Ubuntu user? It is more convenient for people to install this way and not via compiling from sources. I had some problems with it...
2. Sorry for hundreds times asked question but I will try ask for other users: any chance to have full-text search sometime in the future?

Thanx and keep great work

I'm not a package maintaner myself. But I have been working for a while in a GoldenDict portable Linux version. I just posted some links to it with some how-to. You can check it here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1764

Sorry, I cannot help here. I'm not familiar with full-text search programming so It would take me forever to implement it correctly. But I would love to see this feature too. One of the most requested.

Chulai, thanx very much for that portable version of GD. Fantastic...

My last question about fulltext engine. I am just a hobby programmer so I have no imagination how hard is to code something like it. I only have an one small idea. Is it illegal to use engine from different piece of SW? For example Stardict. I am sure there are sources for SD on their page. It could work only for off line dictionaries. It's just an idea but I believe hundreds of people are waiting for this feature and it will definitively make GD top 1 among dictionary SW.

I'm not sure about the source code license issues, but to adapt a full-text search solution from SD to GD might be virtually impossible or so time consuming (you have to know very well both projects) that it would be better to just start from scratch. And in my opinion there is no reason for that. There was some start here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=883&start=10 but It didn't progress too much. The ideas was to use Xapian Search engine library for the dictionary indexing and searching.

Yes I read this thread in the past impatiently. After some time it got cold. I have to say some dictionaries are so rich in headwords that some users may consider fulltext to be unnecessary. I will not force anyone of course. I will wait if someone in the future will participate on this feature. As I said some people would definitely use it.
I am only surprised about the fact that I thought full text engine is well known algorithm easy to grab and adjust for GD's conditions. I was apparently wrong...

Re: "What's new?" and communication in general.

I think all four headers on http://www.goldendict.org/forum/index.php, http://goldendict.org, http://sourceforge.net/projects/goldendict/and https://github.com/goldendict/goldendict/wiki should have links to the other three pages.

Right now, it's too easy to assume that the Goldendict website you're browsing is the only relevant Goldendict website, and to miss some valuable information.

Also, is there a way to be notified whenever a new version is published? If not, would you consider emailing the forum users, for example?

I'd also love a newsletter (2 to 4 times a year would be enough, I think) telling me all about the new dictionaries available.

Thanks! :)
